"You're not exactly a slouch in the brain department, are you? Getting your LSAT scores, following that up with your legal career and, hey, you were the only lawyer I was ever up against who knew the law as well as I did." Ed patted his chest, because he hadn't told him to stop yet. Why not? "Brain and brawn. You're the whole package. It's like Bane without the Philosophy 101 and steroids."
A dream come true. "Smoke away, I'm used to it. Can't stand the smell, but your company makes it worthwhile." It was ever so endearing that he asked. Last guy smoking at him had been that damn doctor in Arkham. He wanted to feed him his cigarettes. Maybe he would, one day, if he didn't get killed off first.
"I should get like, I dunno, nice scented smokes. Get the ones that smell of fruit or menthol or something." Harvey mused idly cause yes, he intended to be in Ed's company often and he didn't want to offend him with his gross smoke. He blew smoke into the air and then exhaled in satisfaction, trying to keep the smoke away from Ed. "I dunno if I'm a genius or anything, I doubt it, I just wanted more than what my dad wanted and I didn't want to end up some Narrows scum that dealt drugs or did the legwork for a mob boss. I wanted to change the city."
Oh, the beautiful irony. It did not work. "Being a lawyer seemed like a good career, you know? Lots to know, lots to study, never boring and you're always busy. I'm a workaholic. It's hard to turn off."
"See, I just wanted to be a little shit smart enough to get away with everything he does." And he was, he could be, could have been, if only his own mind wouldn't get in the way of it. He watched as Harvey smoked, wanting to run a finger along that line of his face, down his throat. Beautiful, it really was. The very image of masculine beauty, spiced up with some body horror. How was he supposed to resist that allure? "I never bothered with education after high school. I knew more than anyone else I'd ever met."
Still held true, for the most part. "You can just delve into rogue work now. There's a way to shape this city."
"It is. I think I made more changes as a rogue than I did in the system, going to court, working 80 hour weeks. It's a fucking waste." He busted his ass and got little reward so yeah, it was nice to see an impact when he actually did stuff. Like when he wanted things to go his way, they usually did. It was nice. He liked it. "I got friends in low places and I ain't gonna complain. I think the future of Gotham is gonna be shaped by the rogues. You, me, the fucking Joker and then Penguin and every other stupid name under the sun."
Harvey smirked and blew smoke aside, looking at Ed with a smile. "We can help each other. You can be my brain and I'll be your muscle. Within reason, of course. Just backing each other up, keeping each other safe. I got your back, Eddie." And he meant it. Genuine and real. "Let's see if we can't keep this shit going. Not all rogues betray."
"Sweetheart, if you never break into my apartment to make me come up with a plan for you at gunpoint in the middle of the night, you'll have done better by me than about 80% of the others." Honestly, he would have moved, but what was the point? The Joker was bound to find out his new address and from there it would always trickle down. Inevitable. "You've been accepted. Time was, the Joker and I would vet who was worthy. These days, it kind of seems to sort itself out. I can tell you're a big name."
Already was, really. "I won't even make you seal it with a kiss." The Joker usually did.
He didn't think he would have to kiss any rogue. He pulled a face and then looked off into the distance, mentally running through all the rogues and then relented, shrugging. "I mean, if I had to kiss any of the guy-rogues, it'd probably be you. You're the only one that doesn't actively repulse me." He debated it again and then looked at Edward. Then he laughed, giddy and easily amused. "I think I'd also rather kiss you than the girls in the club too cause, let's be real here, Pam would rip my dick off if I tried and Harls is under the Joker's dibs. So congrats, Ed, you're my most kissable rogue."
"Flattering as that is, I don't know if I have that much competition. I'm easily the best-looking of the bunch." No need for false modesty here. "Also the best hygiene." That was an easy one to win as well, worryingly enough.
Daringly, Ed put an arm around Harvey's shoulder, looking at him as he reached up with one hand to cup his face, on the good side. He gently ran a thumb along Harvey's lower lip, having a feeling that Harvey would let him. Harvey seemed to have found himself in an elaborate game of gay chicken, or perhaps he simply didn't care. Maybe he liked being touched, even if it was by Ed. Or maybe he'd teach him to like his touch especially.
"When we kiss," the 'when' was a very deliberate word choice, "it's going to be out of desire. Nothing more, nothing less."
"You're so certain, eh? Well. Universal genius, let's see if you're seeing something that's there or something that ain't."
Cause Ed could touch his face, fondle his chest and flirt as much as he liked but Harvey wasn't feeling much like kissing him. He liked him, in some ways he wanted him but he wasn't making a move. He wasn't there yet. Though he did like how Edward was, how he touched his face, as he spoke to him, the feelings he put into it. The game was fun.
